How to choose between them
Both are serious SAP schools in the South zone with strong Chinese foundations, so the real question is whether you value GEP access and a Catholic High pathway, or a tighter community feel with a Chung Cheng route. Neither is a wrong choice — it comes down to your child and your family's priorities.
Consider Ai Tong School if…
- GEP centre gives academically strong kids a clear stretch pathway
- Affiliation to Catholic High is one of the most sought-after secondary routes
Consider Pei Chun Public School if…
- Deep community spirit means kids often feel more rooted and supported
- Chung Cheng affiliation suits families who value strong Chinese cultural identity
Visit both schools on open house day — the atmosphere in the corridors will tell you more than any ranking.
Get to know each school
Ai Tong School
Ai Tong was founded on 12 October 1912 and began lessons on 8 July 1913, initially with 30 pupils in a Methodist church at Boon Tat Street. The Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan took over in 1929; it became a government-aided school in 1957 and a SAP school in 1989. Its history records the move to Bright Hill Drive in 1992 and a shift to single-session schooling in 2016. Those milestones explain the school’s long Chinese educational heritage without turning its past into a guarantee about a child’s results.
The iDare@ATS Applied Learning Programme describes specially designed activities for Primary 3–6 beyond the academic curriculum. Pupils work together to apply knowledge, solve real problems and design products or experiences. Its published routes include SCAMPER, Design Thinking and Community Problem Solving, with separate talent programmes such as the P4 Thinkers Programme and Future Problem Solving. The useful distinction is between the broad project experience and specialist extensions. Parents can ask what their child will actually make or investigate, and how a teacher guides a project when the first attempt fails.
Pei Chun Public School
Pei Chun Public School was founded in 1933 by Hainanese community members to educate children of the Chinese working class. It became government-aided in 1956 and a Special Assistance Plan school in 1990. The school moved to Lorong 7 Toa Payoh in 2001, temporarily used a Toa Payoh East holding site for PERI upgrading from the end of 2016, and returned in 2019. Single-session operation began in 2020. Its heritage page describes the added indoor playing field; the old “85 years” phrase is not used to calculate its current age.
The Bilingual Media Studies Programme has been part of the school-based curriculum since 2015. Its published common sequence includes Primary 2 speech and drama, Primary 3 interview skills, Primary 4 basic oratorical techniques and Primary 5 news reporting, with coding and presentation platforms. Specialised opportunities for pupils keen on languages include Bilingual Superstar, FM193.3, hosting visiting delegations and theatre or drama enrichment. Those additional platforms are distinct from the level-based programme. The English department also lists graded readers for Primary 1–3 and newspapers for Primary 4–6, alongside show-and-tell and readers’ theatre.
