How to choose between them

Both are East zone co-ed JCs, so location is a wash. The real question is fit: TJC is one of the most competitive schools in the East with nearly 50 years of identity, while TMJC offers a wider entry band and a fresh, still-forming culture that some students genuinely thrive in.

Consider Tampines Meridian Junior College if…

  • More accessible entry if your L1R5 sits between 9 and 13
  • Smaller, newer campus culture can mean more visibility and opportunities

Consider Temasek Junior College if…

  • Significantly stronger academic benchmark with L1R5 cutoff of 4 to 8
  • Decades of established track record, alumni network, and school identity

If you can get into TJC, go — but TMJC is a real school, not a consolation prize.

Tampines Meridian Junior College

TMJC began operations in January 2019 at the former Meridian Junior College site, following the announced merger with Tampines Junior College in April 2017. Its shared identity developed over several years: the first badge-pinning ceremony and TM Run took place in 2019, the college anthem followed in 2020, and TM EcoGreen began in 2021. Drama and Malay language electives also have roots in Tampines Junior College. That history helps explain why a relatively young college has established specialist programmes alongside newer traditions.

The published norm is three H2 and one H1 content subjects, with a contrasting subject across the arts/science divide. Four H2 subjects require a raw L1R5 of 11 or better and the relevant subject guidelines; meeting these conditions does not guarantee a particular combination. A class needs at least 15 students to form. Art, Further Mathematics and Theatre Studies & Drama have diagnostic assessments. Further Mathematics must be paired with H2 Mathematics, while H2 Mathematics assumes O-Level Additional Mathematics knowledge. Families should check which combinations will actually run for their intake before relying on an intended university pathway.

Temasek Junior College

Temasek JC began in 1977 in Bedok, taking Singapore’s old name, meaning “Sea Town”. Its early teachers developed the motto For College, For Nation. MOE records the Humanities Scholarship centre from 1982, Music Elective Scholarship centre from 1986 and Chinese Language Elective Scholarship centre from 1990. The six-year Integrated Programme launched in 2013, following an earlier four-year programme in 2005. These milestones explain the specialist strands available today; they should not be read as every student receiving a scholarship or taking every elective.

The college’s later relocation notice puts the former Tampines JC holding site in use from January 2024 through December 2027, with the rebuilt Bedok campus expected from January 2028. This supersedes the older 2022/2025 timeline still displayed in MOE’s history page. The rebuilding page describes planned separate IP and JC teaching blocks, configurable learning spaces, sports and music facilities, and a heritage trail. These are future facilities, not the current holding-campus offer. Check the latest confirmed move date and both journeys when considering a cohort that may study across the transition.

Questions about these schools

How should I choose between Tampines Meridian Junior College and Temasek Junior College?

Start with programmes, the CCAs your child wants and the actual journey from home. Visit both schools to assess the daily environment. Counts and past results alone do not establish which school fits your child.

Do past admission records guarantee a place?

No. Check the current course's subject requirements, aggregate system and posting rules. Historical cut-offs do not guarantee a future place.
