How to choose between them

Both are North zone SAP boys' schools with strong Chinese language traditions, but they serve very different academic profiles. Catholic High's IP track and tighter COP range makes it a stretch school for high scorers, while Maris Stella's wider COP and O-Level pathway means more boys genuinely belong there.

Consider Catholic High School if…

  • IP track means no O-Levels — six uninterrupted years to JC
  • SAP plus 8 SYF Distinctions signals serious bilingual academic rigour

Consider Maris Stella High School if…

  • COP up to 12 means a real shot for a broader range of AL scores
  • 37 CCAs and Marist Brothers heritage builds unusually strong school identity

Choose Catholic High if your son is chasing the IP path; choose Maris Stella if you want a school that will genuinely celebrate who he already is.

Get to know each school

Catholic High School

Catholic High began in 1935 within the Church of St Peter and Paul at Queen Street, founded by Father Edward Becheras. It moved to Bishan in 1992. The school describes bilingualism as a founding principle and welcomes Catholic and non-Catholic pupils. This review concerns the secondary section: primary-school CCA, curriculum and camp reports cannot establish what a secondary pupil will experience, even though both sections share the school name and website.

The current secondary overview presents the Joint Integrated Programme and SEC Programme. IP pupils spend four years at Catholic High before progressing to Eunoia Junior College; SP pupils apply to post-secondary institutions using examination results and may choose junior college or polytechnic. The track is chosen during DSA or Secondary 1 posting. The page distinguishes CJC affiliation from EJC: SP pupils do not receive affiliation bonus points for EJC. Families should check the applicable admissions rules rather than assume an IP partnership guarantees an SP place.

Maris Stella High School

Maris Stella plans to rebuild its Mount Vernon campuses from 2027 to 2029. Its secondary section will use the former Bedok North Secondary School site; the primary section uses a different site. The 2027 information page sets an 8am start for Sec 1–4 pupils, superseding the 7.30am routine in its general admission FAQ for that period. Return to Mount Vernon is tentatively in 2030. The secondary school remains all-boys: the move towards co-education is a primary-section change. Families should plan travel to the secondary holding campus.

Brother Chanel Soon founded Maris Stella in 1958 in borrowed classrooms at St Stephen’s, initially with both primary and secondary classes. It moved to Mount Vernon in 1967; the secondary section became a SAP school in 1979 and autonomous in 1996. The current FAQ welcomes pupils of all faiths. Some assembly activities introduce Catholic traditions to all students, while additional Catholic camps and masses are described as optional for non-Catholics. Families can discuss those arrangements directly instead of assuming either religious membership or complete absence of faith-related activities.
