How to choose between them
Both schools are strong SAP choices with nearly identical COP ranges and CCA breadth, so the decision really comes down to heritage, location, and how much the school culture resonates with your child. Nan Hua's century-plus history and South zone location suit families in that corridor, while Chung Cheng Main's wider COP band and East zone placement give it a different fit.
Consider Chung Cheng High School (Main) if…
- Wider COP band (5D-10M) gives more students a realistic shot
- East zone location is convenient for families in the East
Consider Nan Hua High School if…
- Over a century of heritage signals deep-rooted bilingual culture
- Two more SYF Distinctions suggest a slightly stronger arts programme
Visit both on open house day — the school culture you feel walking through the gate matters more than any data point I can show you.
Get to know each school
Chung Cheng High School (Main)
Chung Cheng began as a boys' school at Kim Yam Road on 24 January 1939. It closed during the Japanese Occupation and reopened in 1945, admitting girls. The Goodman Road campus became Chung Cheng High School (Main) in 1947; the original campus became the Branch school, which later moved to Yishun. The school joined the Special Assistance Plan in 1979 and became autonomous in 1996. Its Administration Building and Entrance Arch were gazetted together as a National Monument in 2014. The school records the reopening of the Grand Auditorium in July 2025.
Students mention the lake when describing their school days. A 2024 graduate described walking beside it when studies felt overwhelming, and staying in classrooms to study after lessons. In a separate account, a self-described Secondary 4 student wrote about spending time revising in the “fish tank” study space. The 2024 graduate also gave specific examples of teacher help: optional Additional Maths lessons during the June holidays, Chemistry revision sessions for a small group, and teachers willing to mark extra work. The Secondary 4 writer praised their upper-secondary teachers but said their lower-secondary experience had been disappointing. For an incoming Secondary 1 family, support in the first two years is worth asking about.

Nan Hua High School
Nan Hwa Girls’ School began on Coleman Street in 1917 as a Chinese-medium school supported by Cantonese businessmen. It added secondary classes in 1957 and became fully secondary in 1964. Following relocation to Clementi, it became a co-educational English-medium school in 1984. SAP status followed in 2000; the current Clementi Avenue 1 premises opened for operations in January 2004. It became Nan Hua High and autonomous in 2006, introducing its Bicultural Programme in 2009. This is the secondary school’s history and should be kept distinct from Nan Hua Primary.
The science department says STEM Playground participation is offered during curriculum time to all pupils. It gives examples from the 2025 challenges: a chemical-reaction boat made from recycled bottles and a slow-descending paper helicopter. Beyond these shared experiences, the page describes external competitions and a student physics presentation on water’s surface tension. Such examples show both practical classroom exploration and opportunities for further interest. Awards belong to the participating teams; they should not be treated as a measure of every child’s science attainment or an automatic competition place.
