How to choose between them

Both are solid West zone co-ed schools with similar COP ranges, so the real differentiator is what your child wants to pursue. Hillgrove's Flight and Aerospace ALP is genuinely rare, while Yuan Ching's longer heritage gives it a settled, community-rooted feel.

Consider Hillgrove Secondary School if…

  • Flight and Aerospace ALP is one of the most distinctive programmes in Singapore
  • 12 DSA areas and 3 SYF Distinctions signal strong co-curricular breadth

Consider Yuan Ching Secondary School if…

  • Slightly wider COP entry range gives more students a realistic shot
  • Nearly 50 years of heritage means deep school culture and alumni network

If your child has a passion for aviation or wants more DSA pathways, Hillgrove stands out — otherwise Yuan Ching's established community is hard to overlook.

Get to know each school

Hillgrove Secondary School

Hillgrove Secondary began in 2001 with 277 pupils, initially sharing Yusof Ishak Secondary’s premises. MOE records its move to 10 Bukit Batok Street 52 on 2 February 2002 and official opening on 5 March 2004. Flight and aerospace became its ALP in 2014, followed by the arts LLP in 2015. These milestones explain the two strands visible in the school’s current open-house materials. Historical enrolment and earlier principals’ descriptions are not used to infer the present pupil population or a uniform experience of school culture.

The ALP microsite describes a three-tier approach to STEM through flight and aerospace. Its April 2023 example involved all Secondary 2 pupils building and flying rubber-band-powered gliders; a separate group of 20 Secondary 1 and 2 pupils was selected for drone training. Earlier entries discuss autonomous-vehicle principles with mBot in 2021 and coding drones in 2019. These give tangible examples of applied learning, but they are dated records. Ask what the incoming cohort will actually build, how often lessons occur and how pupils enter additional training.

Yuan Ching Secondary School

MOE records Yuan Ching’s establishment in 1978 as an English and Chinese integrated government school and its official opening on 28 August 1980. It became English-medium in 1988 and offered pre-university Arts and Commerce courses between 1987 and 1990. Those courses are historical, not current entry options. The campus was rebuilt from 2006–2009. MOE’s history also retains older Marine Robotics and sports-based programme names; the current school pages describe broader R.E.A.P engineering learning and Community Youth Leadership. Present programme descriptions should therefore be checked against those current pages.

The Applied Learning Programme’s common tier includes coding, an AI camera and land, marine and aerial robotics. Secondary 1 land robotics involves building remote-controlled vehicles; another project adds water-quality sensors to Seaperches for geographical investigation at Jurong Lake Gardens. A programme launched in 2024 uses temperature and humidity sensors with microgreens. Deeper-interest pupils have a separate talent-development route involving advanced construction, Python and other enrichment, with competitions at its higher end. These distinctions matter: shared exposure is not a guarantee of every specialist course, external visit or competition place for every pupil.
