How to choose between them

Both Hwa Chong and Raffles are as elite as it gets in Singapore — the real question is whether your child thrives in a bilingual Chinese-heritage environment or a broader liberal arts setting. Neither choice is wrong; they just shape different kinds of thinkers.

Consider Hwa Chong Institution if…

  • Strongest bilingual program in Singapore with deep Chinese cultural roots
  • 88 CCAs and 13 SYF Distinctions signal a vibrant co-curricular culture

Consider Raffles Institution if…

  • 31 DSA areas and research focus suit students who want to explore widely
  • Oldest school in Singapore with unmatched breadth of opportunities

If you know your child's learning style, the right fit usually becomes obvious pretty quickly.

Get to know each school

Hwa Chong Institution

Hwa Chong Institution dates its roots to the Chinese High School, founded by Tan Kah Kee in 1919, and Hwa Chong Junior College, established in 1974. Their 2005 merger created the present institution: the former schools became its High School and College sections. The Chinese High became a SAP school in 1979 and independent in 1987; the college became independent in 2004. This distinction is useful when reading alumni accounts. A junior-college experience describes a later stage of the six-year pathway, rather than necessarily the daily experience of a new Secondary 1 pupil.

The September 2026 academic page organises the Integrated Programme into three stages: a general curriculum for exploring fields, deeper study in chosen areas, then consolidation towards Cambridge A Levels. Research tasks and projects can involve internal and external mentors. Sports, arts and service learning are also described as parts of the curriculum. The institution lists specialised programmes, including Art Elective, school-based gifted education and Science and Math Talent provisions. The general IP framework and a place in a particular specialist programme are separate matters; families need the entry and continuation requirements for the programme their child is considering.

Raffles Institution

RI was founded as Singapore Institution in 1823. Its move from Bras Basah to Grange Road came in 1972, followed by Bishan and independent status in 1990. Raffles Junior College was established in 1982 to take over pre-university enrolment and reintegrated with RI in 2009. MOE’s history dates the six-year Raffles Programme, leading to A Levels, to 2004. Families researching Year 1 should distinguish Years 1–4 provision from Years 5–6 activities and accounts; both now appear under the RI name.

The Years 1–4 history page describes historical inquiry, projects, learning journeys and engagement with experts and the wider community, alongside learning how historians construct arguments. Character and Leadership Education uses lessons and assemblies to develop values and social-emotional skills, with cohort and class community projects. These describe approaches and platforms rather than a fixed list of trips for every pupil. Families can ask what inquiry assignments require, how independent work is scaffolded and how community projects fit the ordinary academic timetable.
