How to choose between them

Both are ACS schools sharing the same brotherhood DNA, but they offer genuinely different journeys. Barker Road gives your son a focused O-Level environment with that tight-knit boys' school camaraderie. Independent offers the IP track, co-ed environment, and a much richer co-curricular spread — at a price.

Consider Anglo-Chinese School (Barker Road) if…

  • Boys-only environment builds strong ACS brotherhood bonds
  • Government-aided fees make it far more affordable

Consider Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) if…

  • IP track removes O-Level pressure, direct route to A-Levels
  • 68 CCAs versus 30 means far more room to explore interests

If your son thrives in a close-knit, single-gender setting and the O-Level route suits him, Barker Road is the hidden gem — but if breadth, the IP experience, and co-ed life matter more and budget allows, Independent is hard to beat.

Get to know each school

Anglo-Chinese School (Barker Road)

The ACS family began with a shophouse school on Amoy Street in 1886, but the Barker Road school itself was established in January 1994 with primary and secondary pupils. MOE’s Heritage Centre records the split into ACS (Primary) and ACS (Barker Road) in 1997, followed by a return to the rebuilt Barker Road campus in January 2003. A shared indoor sports hall was consecrated in 2022 after construction delays. This history helps distinguish the secondary school from the primary school on the same campus.

The Applied Learning Programme uses drama, debate and public speaking. Its published sequence starts with Secondary 1 storytelling workshops, moves to Secondary 2 drama and theatre exposure linked to the literature text, and adds debates, drama workshops and theatre exposure in Secondary 3. A separate talent-development tier offers training for speaking competitions, Model United Nations and emceeing school events. The distinction matters: the basic sequence describes broader provision, while competition preparation involves additional participation.

Anglo-Chinese School (Independent)

The ACS family began in 1886, while ACS (Independent) became an independent school in January 1988 and moved from Barker Road to Dover Road in January 1992. MOE’s Heritage Centre records the introduction of its dual-track model in 2004 and IB World School accreditation in 2005. These milestones explain how the present routes developed. The school’s six-year history also includes pre-university education, so an account of Years 5 and 6 should not automatically be treated as a secondary pupil’s experience.

The school profile updated in September 2026 describes a four-year Secondary Education Certificate route and a six-year Integrated Programme leading to the IB Diploma. It says the IP allows progression to pre-university study without sitting the SEC examinations. This is a meaningful distinction when reading subject pages or community accounts: some describe preparation for an examination route, while others describe a curriculum built towards IB. Families should establish the route offered to their child and the progression conditions before comparing the experiences.
