How to choose between them

Both are boys' schools in the South zone with strong traditions and identical SYF track records. ACS Barker gives you a wider COP range and more DSA pathways; St Andrew's brings a tighter-knit community and a distinctive engineering focus through its ALP.

Consider Anglo-Chinese School (Barker Road) if…

  • Wider COP range 6-9 gives more students a realistic shot
  • 17 DSA areas and 30 CCAs mean more ways to stand out

Consider St Andrew's School (Secondary) if…

  • Engineering-focused ALP suits boys with a strong STEM lean
  • 163-year heritage and Anglican values create a close community

If your son thrives with breadth and options, lean Barker; if he wants a focused engineering pathway in a school that feels like a family, St Andrew's is hard to beat.

Get to know each school

Anglo-Chinese School (Barker Road)

The ACS family began with a shophouse school on Amoy Street in 1886, but the Barker Road school itself was established in January 1994 with primary and secondary pupils. MOE’s Heritage Centre records the split into ACS (Primary) and ACS (Barker Road) in 1997, followed by a return to the rebuilt Barker Road campus in January 2003. A shared indoor sports hall was consecrated in 2022 after construction delays. This history helps distinguish the secondary school from the primary school on the same campus.

The Applied Learning Programme uses drama, debate and public speaking. Its published sequence starts with Secondary 1 storytelling workshops, moves to Secondary 2 drama and theatre exposure linked to the literature text, and adds debates, drama workshops and theatre exposure in Secondary 3. A separate talent-development tier offers training for speaking competitions, Model United Nations and emceeing school events. The distinction matters: the basic sequence describes broader provision, while competition preparation involves additional participation.

St Andrew's School (Secondary)

The school dates its founding to 8 September 1862, when the Anglican Church adopted an earlier Chin Chew Street institution. The Woodsville campus opened in 1940; the secondary school later used a new Potong Pasir site in 1986, before returning to Woodsville in December 2004 as part of St Andrew’s Village. The Village officially opened in August 2006. On 8 September 2025, the junior and secondary schools were renamed St Andrew’s School (Junior) and St Andrew’s School (Secondary), reflecting their shared identity rather than a newly established school.

The science page describes Secondary 1 investigations of Kallang River water quality and its ecosystem, followed by Secondary 2 ecological surveys at the park connector. In the Therapeutic Garden, pupils compare heat absorption across surfaces and containers using data loggers. Upper-secondary science offerings include Biology, Chemistry, Physics and combined-science options. The subject list does not guarantee every combination to every pupil. These practical descriptions show how scientific inquiry is introduced; they do not establish competition entry for all students or measured environmental outcomes.
