How to choose between them
Both schools sit in the West and share a COP ceiling of 22, so your child qualifies for either. The real choice is between Assumption's 70-year Gabrielite character tradition and Westwood's broader co-curricular menu — two genuinely different school cultures worth weighing carefully.
Consider Assumption English School if…
- Seven decades of Catholic values build strong moral character foundations
- Tighter community feel typical of long-established mission schools
Consider Westwood Secondary School if…
- 14 DSA areas gives talent-driven students far more entry pathways
- 20 CCAs and SYF Distinction signal strong performing arts and activities culture
If your child values deep roots and a values-centred environment, lean Assumption; if they want maximum co-curricular options and DSA flexibility, Westwood wins.
Get to know each school
Assumption English School
The school began in 1953 as Boys’ Town English School, founded by Brother Vincent. MOE’s Heritage Centre records that the secondary section of CHIJ Bukit Timah merged with it in 1973, when it became co-educational and took the Assumption English name. Its primary section closed in December 1992, with pupils absorbed by St Anthony’s Primary. The current building followed another rebuilding from 2013 to 2015 and was officially opened in July 2017. The present secondary school should be distinguished from neighbouring institutions and its former primary section.
The school describes SPEAK as its Applied Learning Programme, using a progression of speaking skills and projects at each level. Students showing a flair for speaking can move into debate, oratory and emceeing opportunities. The English talent page gives dated examples: teams entered debates, book trailers and poetry slam at the 2025 National Schools Literature Festival, while the 2025 Poetry Showdown used the theme of food and eating. Students may also contribute to the student-run AES Manna magazine. These examples show the kinds of writing and performance involved.
Westwood Secondary School
Westwood Secondary accepted its first 200 pupils in January 2000 in a block at Hua Yi Secondary. MOE’s history records a move to 11 Jurong West Street 25 in December 2000, campus handover in February 2001 and official opening on 12 November 2002. The Innovation and Social Entrepreneurship ALP followed in 2013, Arts for Life! LLP in 2015, and an indoor sports hall and gallery in 2016. These dates explain how its identity developed; they do not measure current class sizes or teaching quality.
The ISE page describes a design-thinking process of understanding users, identifying problems, and developing and testing solutions. Its foundation examples are a Sec 1 Sustainability Challenge and Sec 2 Entrepreneurship Challenge. Advanced development lists industry mentorship, competitions, sustainability projects and e-portfolios. Because this page also serves as a DSA talent description, families should ask which experiences are baseline for all pupils and which require selection. A project or pitch can show how a child thinks, but a list of desired outcomes does not prove every student becomes an entrepreneur.
