How to choose between them

Both schools serve the West zone well and share the same COP ceiling, so the real question is whether your child's profile leans academic or activity-driven. Boon Lay's wider COP range means it catches a broader academic spread, while Westwood's newer campus and slightly richer CCA lineup suit kids who want more structured activity choices.

Consider Boon Lay Secondary School if…

  • 47-year track record signals stable leadership and school culture
  • Tighter top-end COP attracts stronger academic peers

Consider Westwood Secondary School if…

  • 20 CCAs and 14 DSA areas offer more activity and talent pathways
  • Modern Jurong West campus built for contemporary learning needs

If academics drive the choice, lean Boon Lay; if your child lives for CCAs and DSA opportunities, Westwood earns a closer look.

Get to know each school

Boon Lay Secondary School

Boon Lay Secondary merged with Pioneer Secondary in 2017. Its heritage garden and gallery retain both histories rather than suggesting that the combined school was newly founded that year. The school describes a replica of the Wisdom Bridge, originally built with students’ involvement in 1978, and Ng Eng Teng’s Unity sculpture, unveiled in 1995. The latter also inspired the school logo. These are tangible connections to the two schools’ past that a visitor can look for near the entrance and General Office.

The handbook effective from 29 June 2026 says pupils’ school experiences are organised around CCA groups, with CCA mentors acting as form teachers and guiding the same group through secondary school. NIE’s September 2023 SingTeach feature explains the CCA-Family and CCE-Level structures: juniors and seniors interact, and different CCAs can be paired, such as Boys’ Brigade and Contemporary Dance. The current directory lists 16 CCAs, some with gender restrictions. A family should therefore understand allocation and mentoring arrangements as well as the activity itself.

Westwood Secondary School

Westwood Secondary accepted its first 200 pupils in January 2000 in a block at Hua Yi Secondary. MOE’s history records a move to 11 Jurong West Street 25 in December 2000, campus handover in February 2001 and official opening on 12 November 2002. The Innovation and Social Entrepreneurship ALP followed in 2013, Arts for Life! LLP in 2015, and an indoor sports hall and gallery in 2016. These dates explain how its identity developed; they do not measure current class sizes or teaching quality.

The ISE page describes a design-thinking process of understanding users, identifying problems, and developing and testing solutions. Its foundation examples are a Sec 1 Sustainability Challenge and Sec 2 Entrepreneurship Challenge. Advanced development lists industry mentorship, competitions, sustainability projects and e-portfolios. Because this page also serves as a DSA talent description, families should ask which experiences are baseline for all pupils and which require selection. A project or pitch can show how a child thinks, but a list of desired outcomes does not prove every student becomes an entrepreneur.
