Get to know each school

Bedok South Secondary School

Bedok South Secondary was established in 1980 and initially shared premises with Temasek Secondary and Kong San Primary. It moved to 1 Jalan Langgar Bedok in December 2002, and the campus officially opened in February 2004. MOE’s history records the later Project S.H.I.N.E innovation programme and SHAPE sports-and-outdoor emphasis. The history page gives inconsistent introduction and implementation years for SHAPE, so those dates are not used here to make a precise chronology.

The school’s current DSA programme description lists Secondary 1–2 design-thinking workshops and learning journeys involving makers and social entrepreneurs. It separately identifies makerspace activities for selected lower-secondary students, innovation competitions for selected Secondary 3 students, and an overseas ALP/LLP trip for selected Secondary 2–3 students. These distinctions matter: seeing a named competition or overseas trip on the website does not establish participation for every pupil. The DSA page is useful for programme scope but contains a conflicting intake-year sentence in its timeline.

Hua Yi Secondary School

Hua Yi started in 1956 as a government Chinese middle school on Fowlie Road. It moved through Winstedt Road and Margaret Drive before later operating at Depot Road, and reached its present Jurong West Street 42 premises in December 1999. MOE records English classes beginning in 1979 and the end of pre-university enrolment. Its heritage also includes xinyao compositions and bonsai cultivation. These explain the school’s cultural roots; they do not make today’s secondary programme a Chinese-only course or a pre-university route.

The August 2026 ALP page says Secondary 1 now uses micro:bit kits, transitioning from M5GO, for block-based coding and design projects. Secondary 2 progresses to AI for Fun using AI EF and ET Kit 2 hardware, while Secondary 3 has applied modules through polytechnics and ITE. The same page retains a pupil reflection about M5GO, so that account should not overwrite the newer equipment description. An overseas Taiwan exchange is described for a group of students, rather than as travel automatically available to everyone.
