How to choose between them

Both schools serve a similar academic band and sit in the South zone, so the real question is what your child needs beyond the classroom. Guangyang's century-plus history and wider CCA menu give it more extracurricular depth, while Bukit Merah offers a tighter, well-established community feel.

Consider Bukit Merah Secondary School if…

  • Smaller CCA pool means more focused, less spread-thin co-curricular culture
  • SYF Distinctions signal genuine performing arts commitment

Consider Guangyang Secondary School if…

  • 22 CCAs and 5 DSA areas give more room to explore different interests
  • Over 100 years of alumni network and institutional stability

If your child already knows what they love, Guangyang's breadth wins; if they thrive in a closer-knit setting, Bukit Merah is worth the look.

Get to know each school

Bukit Merah Secondary School

Bukit Merah Secondary was established in 1968 at 10 Lengkok Bahru with English- and Chinese-medium classes. It became English-medium in 1984. MOE’s heritage history records mergers with Saint Thomas in 2001, Delta in 2004 and Henderson in 2017, and a temporary stay at Raeburn Park before returning in March 2003. The school marked its 50th anniversary in 2018. Its history therefore includes several former communities, alongside the floorball and robotics programmes now described on the school’s own pages.

Creative Robotics and Engineering is a two-year ALP for Secondary 1 and 2. The first year introduces AI and machine learning through Micro:bit coding tasks involving visual and vocal recognition. The second uses group design and prototypes to address simulated real-life problems. A separate tier, anchored by the Engineering and Innovation Club, serves pupils with greater interest or aptitude and offers competition opportunities. The common programme and that additional CCA tier are different commitments, even though both use coding and engineering.

Guangyang Secondary School

Guangyang traces its roots to Kong Yiong School, founded in 1918 to offer Chinese primary education. It became Kong Yiong High School in 1959, then split into primary and secondary schools in 1984. MOE records the secondary closure in 1986, a new Bishan school in 1987 and an official opening in 1990. Guangyang Secondary merged with Braddell-Westlake in 2006. The primary school’s separate relocation belongs to a different stage; its later programmes should not be attributed to the secondary school.

The STEM ALP runs during curriculum time for all lower-secondary pupils. Secondary 1 designs and tests solar-powered cars, applying energy, forces and motion through prototypes and a friendly race. Secondary 2 investigates a fictional case using fingerprints, simulated drug tests and an autopsy report, ending with a written report. Food security and hydroponics are other stated themes. These are classroom applications of science; the forensic exercise is not a real criminal investigation or professional qualification.
