How to choose between them
Both schools sit in the South zone and serve a wide range of PSLE scores, so the real question is what your child needs most. Bendemeer punches above its weight in performing arts; Guangyang carries over a century of tradition and pulls in a slightly stronger academic cohort at the top end.
Consider Bendemeer Secondary School if…
- Three SYF Distinctions signal a serious, committed performing arts culture
- Good fit if your child scores in the AL 11–22 range and loves the arts
Consider Guangyang Secondary School if…
- Century-old roots and a tighter top-end COP suggest a stronger academic peer group
- Marginally broader CCA spread with 22 options gives more room to explore
If performing arts matter, Bendemeer is the clear call; if you want a school with deeper academic tradition and slightly more competitive intake, Guangyang edges ahead.

Bendemeer Secondary School
Bendemeer Secondary opened in 1977 along Serangoon Road and also served as a pre-university centre from 1980 to 1995. It merged with Whampoa Secondary in 1994, then moved to the former Whampoa site at 1 St Wilfred Road in 1998. These are distinct events in MOE’s history record. Older alumni memories may include the pre-university years or the former campus, rather than the present secondary-school setting.
The current ALP introduces all students to sustainability over Secondary 1 and 2. The first year covers food, water and land through design-thinking projects and waste-reduction campaigns. The second turns to energy: students examine carbon footprints and life-cycle assessments, and use micro:bit technology for systems such as energy monitoring or smart lighting. The ALP Eco Stewards talent-development programme goes further into inquiry and national-level initiatives. That extension is separate from the two-year programme for the whole cohort.
Guangyang Secondary School
Guangyang traces its roots to Kong Yiong School, founded in 1918 to offer Chinese primary education. It became Kong Yiong High School in 1959, then split into primary and secondary schools in 1984. MOE records the secondary closure in 1986, a new Bishan school in 1987 and an official opening in 1990. Guangyang Secondary merged with Braddell-Westlake in 2006. The primary school’s separate relocation belongs to a different stage; its later programmes should not be attributed to the secondary school.
The STEM ALP runs during curriculum time for all lower-secondary pupils. Secondary 1 designs and tests solar-powered cars, applying energy, forces and motion through prototypes and a friendly race. Secondary 2 investigates a fictional case using fingerprints, simulated drug tests and an autopsy report, ending with a written report. Food security and hydroponics are other stated themes. These are classroom applications of science; the forensic exercise is not a real criminal investigation or professional qualification.
