How to choose between them
Both are solid North-zone co-ed schools, but they serve slightly different families. Compassvale suits kids who want breadth in CCAs within a tight-knit Sengkang community. North Vista rewards students with stronger academics or performing arts ambitions — and its 70-year track record shows.
Consider Compassvale Secondary School if…
- 31 CCAs — most room to explore interests
- Sengkang heartland community feel
Consider North Vista Secondary School if…
- 4 SYF Distinctions signal stronger performing arts
- 10 DSA areas opens more direct admission routes
If your child's PSLE score sits at the top of the range, North Vista's tighter COP ceiling is the tiebreaker.
Get to know each school
Compassvale Secondary School
Compassvale Secondary began in 2000, spending its first six months at Sengkang Secondary before moving to Compassvale Crescent. The campus officially opened in 2002. MOE’s history records an aeronautics Applied Learning Programme and a community-and-youth-leadership Learning for Life Programme from 2016. The current programme pages show how those themes have developed: aeronautics now sits within ACES, while the current Learning for Life Programme is Green Compass, unified in 2024.
ACES covers Aeronautics, Coding, Engineering and Sustainability. All lower-secondary students take the formal programme, exploring flight principles and working on coding, engineering or green-design projects. The school gives examples such as a motor-operated toy car, a stationery holder with a potted plant and LED memo sheet, and a solar charger. Students completing the programme at the end of Secondary 2 receive Singapore Polytechnic’s Young Engineers Award (ALP). STEM elective modules and visits extend the classroom work. Competitions and specialist CCAs offer further development for talented or strongly interested students; participation in every extension is not promised.

North Vista Secondary School
The school began in 1956 as Gan Eng Seng Government Chinese Middle School, was renamed Thomson Government Chinese Middle School in 1958, and later merged with Thomson Vocational School to become Thomson Secondary. It moved to Sengkang on 15 December 2000 and adopted North Vista Secondary as its English name, retaining 德新中学 in Chinese. The current campus officially opened on 8 July 2003. Old Thomson accounts therefore belong to the school’s history, but may describe a different campus and structure from today’s secondary provision.
The ALP names Cities and Urban Landscapes as its 2026 context. All Secondary 1 pupils take high-tech-farming workshops and hands-on hydroponics to grow edibles. Further experiences with outside organisations depend on interest. BioBloom is a separate tier for selected Infocomm Club members: they work on food-waste conditions for worms and harvest compost for the school’s edible gardens. The page’s Secondary 3 examples include moisture sensors and probes. That club project is more specialised than the common Secondary 1 experience, and should not be assigned to the entire cohort.
