Recorded entry ranges

CompareDunman High SchoolRiver Valley High School
IP · Non-affiliated2026 · 4D–8M2026 · 4M–9M

Each range belongs to the intake year and programme shown. Affiliated and non-affiliated ranges are separate. D, M and P are Higher Mother Tongue requirements. Past ranges do not guarantee admission.

How to choose between them

Both schools share the same founding year and SAP IP DNA, but Dunman High edges ahead on academic selectivity — its COP ceiling sits at 8M versus River Valley's 9M. If your child is in the East and strong in bilingual studies, Dunman is arguably the sharper choice. River Valley suits West-siders who want a school where sports and performing arts genuinely thrive.

Consider Dunman High School if…

  • Tighter COP range signals stronger academic cohort overall
  • 24 SYF Distinctions and 18 DSA areas show broad co-curricular depth

Consider River Valley High School if…

  • West-zone location cuts daily commute for families in that half of Singapore
  • Known strength in sports and performing arts beyond just academics

Choose the school your child will wake up excited to attend, not just the one with the lower COP ceiling.

Get to know each school

Dunman High School

Dunman High was established in 1956 as Kallang West Government Chinese Middle School, renamed after moving to Dunman Road in 1957, and became a SAP school in 1979. It moved to Tanjong Rhu in 1995 and began its Integrated Programme in 2005. The current structure has four Junior High years and two Senior High years leading to A levels. This review concerns the secondary stage; Senior High subject offers, scholarships and JC-entry experiences need to be read separately.

The Junior High English page describes oral presentations, multimodal-text analysis, group discussion and Socratic seminars. Literature in English is taken by all lower-secondary pupils; in Years 3 and 4, pupils with an interest may choose it as a Humanities subject. Literature work includes close reading, role play, scriptwriting, research and multimedia presentations. These are specific classroom approaches, rather than evidence that one language dominates all school interactions. Current subject combinations and any requirements for choosing upper-secondary Literature should be confirmed for the relevant cohort.

River Valley High School

River Valley High was established in 1956 and adopted the River Valley name after moving to Jalan Kuala in 1958. MOE records SAP status from 1979, autonomous status from 1994 and the Integrated Programme from 2006. It moved to its current Boon Lay Avenue premises in 2010. Today’s six-year programme runs through A Levels in the school’s own JC section. Secondary and JC activities share one school name, so a Year 1 family needs to check which opportunities apply at the secondary stage.

The school’s FAQ says primary-school Higher Chinese is not a prerequisite for admission, but all secondary pupils take Higher Chinese in S1–4. It lists after-school Chinese support for pupils who struggle and enrichment for developing interest in the language. The FAQ also says promotion criteria apply between levels. Its description of a seamless programme should therefore not be interpreted as automatic progression regardless of attainment. Families can ask for the current criteria and the support offered when a child finds the pace or language demands difficult.
