How to choose between them

Both are elite SAP IP schools demanding strong Chinese, but they serve very different families. Dunman High suits a co-ed learner in the East who wants breadth; Nanyang Girls' is for a high-achieving girl who thrives in a focused, tradition-rich environment — and its COP ceiling of 6M means the bar to enter is genuinely higher.

Consider Dunman High School if…

  • Co-ed IP school with 77 CCAs gives broad co-curricular options
  • East zone location suits families in Tampines, Bedok, Pasir Ris

Consider Nanyang Girls' High School if…

  • Tighter COP range of 4D-6M signals stronger academic peer group
  • All-girls environment often builds confidence and focused study habits

If your daughter is a strong student who wants an all-girls SAP experience, Nanyang Girls' is hard to beat — but if co-ed breadth and East-side convenience matter more, Dunman High delivers.

Get to know each school

Dunman High School

Dunman High was established in 1956 as Kallang West Government Chinese Middle School, renamed after moving to Dunman Road in 1957, and became a SAP school in 1979. It moved to Tanjong Rhu in 1995 and began its Integrated Programme in 2005. The current structure has four Junior High years and two Senior High years leading to A levels. This review concerns the secondary stage; Senior High subject offers, scholarships and JC-entry experiences need to be read separately.

The Junior High English page describes oral presentations, multimodal-text analysis, group discussion and Socratic seminars. Literature in English is taken by all lower-secondary pupils; in Years 3 and 4, pupils with an interest may choose it as a Humanities subject. Literature work includes close reading, role play, scriptwriting, research and multimedia presentations. These are specific classroom approaches, rather than evidence that one language dominates all school interactions. Current subject combinations and any requirements for choosing upper-secondary Literature should be confirmed for the relevant cohort.

Nanyang Girls' High School

Nanyang Girls’ began in a rented Dhoby Ghaut shophouse in 1917, later moving to King’s Road and then Linden Drive in June 1999. It became a SAP school in 1979 and independent in 1993. MOE’s history records the Integrated Programme partnership with Hwa Chong Institution starting in 2004, followed by the Bicultural Studies Programme in 2005. These milestones explain the school’s bilingual and bicultural setting. They do not make every specialist programme automatic for every student; the current talent-development pages should be read alongside individual selection requirements.

All lower-secondary pupils experience art, dance, food studies, maker and music lessons. Maker work uses design thinking: understanding users, identifying needs, developing prototypes and revising products after feedback. Music examples include songwriting and film music; Chinese dance forms part of Appreciation of Chinese Culture. AEP and Higher Music are additional subjects offered through selection, including art portfolio interviews and music auditions. Pupils can also apply at the end of Sec 2 for upper-secondary entry, subject to selection. Broad exposure is therefore distinct from taking a specialist subject.
