How to choose between them
Both are outstanding girls' schools with strong IP tracks, but they serve different families. NYGH is for the bilingual high-achiever who wants Singapore's top SAP environment; SCGS suits the well-rounded girl who wants a storied, nurturing school without the HMT requirement pressure.
Consider Nanyang Girls' High School if…
- Strongest SAP-IP girls' school, ideal if your daughter is bilingual and high-achieving
- COP 4D-6M means entry is extremely competitive — a real signal of peer quality
Consider Singapore Chinese Girls' School if…
- Founded 1899, one of Singapore's oldest girls' schools with deep alumni roots
- COP 6-8 with no HMT suffix means wider eligibility without sacrificing IP track
If your daughter thrives in Chinese and scores in the top band, NYGH is unmatched — but SCGS gives her an equally proud tradition with a little more breathing room at entry.
Get to know each school
Nanyang Girls' High School
Nanyang Girls’ began in a rented Dhoby Ghaut shophouse in 1917, later moving to King’s Road and then Linden Drive in June 1999. It became a SAP school in 1979 and independent in 1993. MOE’s history records the Integrated Programme partnership with Hwa Chong Institution starting in 2004, followed by the Bicultural Studies Programme in 2005. These milestones explain the school’s bilingual and bicultural setting. They do not make every specialist programme automatic for every student; the current talent-development pages should be read alongside individual selection requirements.
All lower-secondary pupils experience art, dance, food studies, maker and music lessons. Maker work uses design thinking: understanding users, identifying needs, developing prototypes and revising products after feedback. Music examples include songwriting and film music; Chinese dance forms part of Appreciation of Chinese Culture. AEP and Higher Music are additional subjects offered through selection, including art portfolio interviews and music auditions. Pupils can also apply at the end of Sec 2 for upper-secondary entry, subject to selection. Broad exposure is therefore distinct from taking a specialist subject.
Singapore Chinese Girls' School
SCGS began in 1899 with seven Peranakan girls on Hill Street, moved to Emerald Hill in 1924 and relocated to Dunearn Road in July 1994. It attained independent status in 1989 and introduced the Integrated Programme alongside its examination route in 2013. This history helps explain the shared primary-secondary institution and its traditions. Today’s secondary programme descriptions should be read separately from the primary storytelling and arts programmes, which appear nearby on the same website but serve a different stage.
The current principal’s message confirms both the Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate route and the Integrated Programme. IP pupils spend four years at SCGS before two years at Eunoia Junior College, within the Joint Integrated Programme with Catholic High and CHIJ St Nicholas Girls’. The admissions page says primary affiliation benefits apply to SEC only, but it still includes old 2025 posting and 2026 test details. Families should confirm incoming-cohort conditions and progression rather than assume primary affiliation secures IP entry or rely on those older dates.
