How to choose between them

Both are genuinely old-school institutions with nearly a century of history each. KCP sits in a wider COP band, giving more students a shot, and it punches above its weight in CCAs and DSA pathways. Serangoon is solid and community-rooted, but narrower in options.

Consider Kuo Chuan Presbyterian Secondary School if…

  • Wider COP range means more students can aim here
  • 12 DSA areas and 26 CCAs offer real breadth of opportunities

Consider Serangoon Secondary School if…

  • ICT-focused ALP suits tech-inclined kids well
  • Tight-knit neighbourhood school with nearly 100 years of local roots

If your child thrives with more doors to explore, KCP has the edge; if a focused ICT track and strong community feel matter more, Serangoon is worth a serious look.

Get to know each school

Kuo Chuan Presbyterian Secondary School

Kuo Chuan’s history begins with Katong Girls’ School in 1924. Presbyterian Boys’ and Kuo Chuan Girls’ schools merged in 1985, then reorganised into separate primary and secondary schools in 1987. The secondary’s history recalls the 2024 centennial and revival of a House system across the two schools. That shared identity does not make the two stages interchangeable. Reviews about primary reading programmes, for example, cannot establish the secondary’s classroom experience. The school describes its present purpose in terms of servant leadership and scholarship, grounded in its Christian founding tradition.

The media-literacy ALP follows a published progression: Secondary 1 podcasting and video production, including a geography visit at Ang Mo Kio–Bishan Park; Secondary 2 talk-show scripts and storyboards in the Mustard Seed studio; and Secondary 3 journalism for the half-yearly magazine Espoir. Spin Doctors adds workshops, speaking and writing competitions and hosting school events. Infocomm and Photography Club members can develop production or photojournalism further. The club extensions are membership-based, while the level descriptions explain the broader ALP sequence. Families interested in media can ask what work pupils produce and how feedback is given.

Serangoon Secondary School

Serangoon Secondary traces its origins to Serangoon English School on Simon Road in 1928. It stopped primary classes in 1957, moved to Lowland Road and adopted its current name in 1967, then relocated to 11 Upper Serangoon View in 2001. Earlier periods included feeding pupils to Raffles schools and offering pre-university classes, which ended in 1976. These are historical roles rather than present affiliations or courses. The school’s long history should be read separately from the programmes and subject options available to a new cohort.

The Future of Transportation ALP gives all Sec 1 pupils 3D modelling and printing in Semester 2, using Tinkercad to design prototypes. All Sec 2 pupils move to drone programming in Semester 1, using Tynker and applying ideas about flight through simulation, testing and debugging. Selected Sec 2–3 pupils extend their learning through Infocomm Club programmes. Upper-secondary Computing is an elective subject offered at G1, G2 and G3 levels to interested pupils who meet academic requirements. Introductory ALP participation therefore does not automatically secure a later Computing place.
