How to choose between them
Both are outstanding IP girls' schools with century-old legacies, but they serve genuinely different families. RGS is Singapore's most competitive girls' school, drawing students who thrive in high-pressure, academically intense environments. MGS offers that same IP pathway with a warmer, values-anchored culture where the arts truly shine.
Consider Methodist Girls' School (Secondary) if…
- Strong music and performing arts tradition with 5 SYF Distinctions
- Methodist values create a close-knit, character-focused community
Consider Raffles Girls' School (Secondary) if…
- Most academically competitive girls' school, COP 4-6 reflects that
- 72 CCAs and 19 DSA areas offer unmatched breadth of opportunities
Choose MGS if community and the arts matter as much as academics; choose RGS if your daughter is ready to be pushed to her absolute best.

Methodist Girls' School (Secondary)
MGS began in 1887 under Sophia Blackmore, moved to Mount Sophia in 1925 and Blackmore Drive in 1992. Its secondary section became independent in 1989 and added the IP in 2013. The current academic pages distinguish the Secondary Education Certificate track from a six-year IP, with Years 5 and 6 at Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) for the International Baccalaureate Diploma. Families should identify the actual offered track before comparing assessment, progression and fees; the shared school name does not make the two programmes interchangeable.
The SEC page gives lower-secondary pupils a broad curriculum including computing, project work and Contemporary Issues: Perspectives & Inquiry. CPI is specifically offered to Sec 1 and 2 in the SEC track, using research and discussion to examine identity, diversity and differing perspectives. Upper-secondary pupils combine core subjects with two to four electives, subject to approval; the list includes Computing, sciences, humanities and Music. A published subject list therefore needs to be read with allocation requirements, rather than as a guarantee of any chosen combination.

Raffles Girls' School (Secondary)
RGS dates its establishment to 1879. Its historical milestones explain that the primary and secondary sections separated in 1959: the secondary section moved to Anderson Road, while the primary section remained at Queen Street as RGPS. RGS and RI introduced the six-year Raffles Programme in 2004. RGS moved from Anderson to Braddell in October 2019. The current admissions overview describes the IP as a six-year commitment and strongly discourages transfers, with transfers to other IP schools allowed only in exceptional circumstances. Families should consider the whole pathway, rather than only Year 1 entry.
The Research Studies curriculum begins with Year 1 skills in inquiry, research design, information literacy and data collection. Year 2 moves into school-based projects, specialised clusters or creative problem-solving, including planning, analysis, report writing and oral presentation. Year 3 intensifies this work and includes public presentation or publication opportunities. The page describes possible external mentorship with universities and other institutions, rather than guaranteeing a particular placement to every pupil. Families can ask how project topics, teams and mentors are allocated, and how research deadlines interact with ordinary subject work.
