How to choose between them

Both are prestigious IP girls' schools with long histories and strong academic reputations. The real choice comes down to whether bilingual excellence and a Catholic SAP environment matters more to your family, or whether a broader CCA spread and Methodist arts culture is the better fit for your daughter.

Consider CHIJ St. Nicholas Girls' School if…

  • SAP programme means genuinely bilingual education, not just a checkbox
  • 9 SYF Distinctions signals consistent performing arts excellence in a focused school

Consider Methodist Girls' School (Secondary) if…

  • 51 CCAs gives your daughter far more room to explore and find her thing
  • Oldest girls' school in Singapore, Methodist values woven naturally into school life

If your daughter is strong in Chinese and thrives in a structured, mission-driven environment, St. Nicholas is hard to beat — but if she needs room to discover herself across a wide range of activities, MGS gives her that space.

Get to know each school

CHIJ St. Nicholas Girls' School

St Nicholas began on 16 January 1933 as Victoria Girls’ School, a Chinese-medium primary school started by the Infant Jesus sisters with 40 pupils. Secondary classes followed in 1938–1939. The school became a SAP school in 1979, moved to Ang Mo Kio Street 13 in 1985 and introduced its Joint Integrated Programme in 2013. These milestones help explain the combination families encounter today: a Catholic school identity alongside a substantial Chinese-language and cultural programme.

The 2026 DSA notice distinguishes the Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate Programme (SP) from the Joint Integrated Programme (JIP) for the 2027 intake. JIP students spend four years at St Nicholas before two at Eunoia Junior College and the A Levels. The school shares the JIP partnership with Catholic High and Singapore Chinese Girls’ School. The notice also requires applicants to offer Chinese or Higher Chinese in primary school, excluding those exempted from these subjects at PSLE.

Methodist Girls' School (Secondary)

MGS began in 1887 under Sophia Blackmore, moved to Mount Sophia in 1925 and Blackmore Drive in 1992. Its secondary section became independent in 1989 and added the IP in 2013. The current academic pages distinguish the Secondary Education Certificate track from a six-year IP, with Years 5 and 6 at Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) for the International Baccalaureate Diploma. Families should identify the actual offered track before comparing assessment, progression and fees; the shared school name does not make the two programmes interchangeable.

The SEC page gives lower-secondary pupils a broad curriculum including computing, project work and Contemporary Issues: Perspectives & Inquiry. CPI is specifically offered to Sec 1 and 2 in the SEC track, using research and discussion to examine identity, diversity and differing perspectives. Upper-secondary pupils combine core subjects with two to four electives, subject to approval; the list includes Computing, sciences, humanities and Music. A published subject list therefore needs to be read with allocation requirements, rather than as a guarantee of any chosen combination.
