Serangoon Garden Secondary School
Serangoon Garden Secondary began as Lichfield Secondary in 1959, became Serangoon Garden Government High in 1960, and merged with Hwi Yoh Vocational School in 1969. A further merger with Serangoon Garden Technical School in 2003 formed the present school, which moved to Serangoon North Avenue 1 in March 2004. Its history includes English and Chinese streams, technical education and periods of pre-university teaching. Those earlier offerings explain its development; they are not a description of the courses available to today’s secondary pupils.
The ALP, Researching Society through Media Literacy, uses Design Thinking to investigate societal issues. Its first tier covers all lower-secondary and Sec 3 pupils. Sec 1 includes checking information across sources and basic photography; Sec 2 develops videography and ethical use of varied media. The extension tier is for pupils with higher aptitude and interest, through talent development, Earth Club and Media Club. Selected pupils attend master classes and learning journeys. The published progression separates broad participation from extra opportunities, rather than promising identical access for everyone.
Swiss Cottage Secondary School
Swiss Cottage began in 1962 with about 200 pupils at Raffles Institution’s Bras Basah premises. It moved to Dunearn Road in July 1963 and officially opened that November, with English- and Malay-medium pupils. Its history describes sport as a means of national integration, followed by a growing emphasis on character, reading and the performing arts. It later relocated to Bukit Batok, where it remains. The MOE history’s narrative and milestone table give different relocation years, so a precise year should not be asserted without reconciliation. PRIME upgrading was completed in 2005; the 50th-anniversary celebration took place in 2013.
Applied Sciences for Sustainable Development follows Awareness, Action and Advocacy. The table identifies common programmes in Sec 1—sustainability-infused Science and interdisciplinary work such as EARTH—and Sec 2, including STEM projects such as Project Dream Maker. It lists no core ALP programme for Sec 3 and above, although leadership opportunities continue. Science Ambassadors facilitate workshops; Maker Education Leaders manage iCreate @ Swiss. Overseas learning journeys are for selected ambassadors or maker leaders, not every pupil. The programme’s broad promise of access should be read alongside these stage and selection limits, rather than becoming a guarantee of travel or competition entry.
