Serangoon Garden Secondary School
Serangoon Garden Secondary began as Lichfield Secondary in 1959, became Serangoon Garden Government High in 1960, and merged with Hwi Yoh Vocational School in 1969. A further merger with Serangoon Garden Technical School in 2003 formed the present school, which moved to Serangoon North Avenue 1 in March 2004. Its history includes English and Chinese streams, technical education and periods of pre-university teaching. Those earlier offerings explain its development; they are not a description of the courses available to today’s secondary pupils.
The ALP, Researching Society through Media Literacy, uses Design Thinking to investigate societal issues. Its first tier covers all lower-secondary and Sec 3 pupils. Sec 1 includes checking information across sources and basic photography; Sec 2 develops videography and ethical use of varied media. The extension tier is for pupils with higher aptitude and interest, through talent development, Earth Club and Media Club. Selected pupils attend master classes and learning journeys. The published progression separates broad participation from extra opportunities, rather than promising identical access for everyone.
Yuying Secondary School
Yuying traces its beginnings to the Hainanese community in 1910, at Prinsep Street. Its Chinese history records wartime disruption and the July 1946 reopening, and says the primary section closed in 1983. The school moved to 47 Hougang Avenue 1 in December 1985 and adopted its present name; the new premises officially opened in August 1987. Its English and Chinese histories differ on when the secondary section began, so the founding year should not be read as a settled date for that section. A 2015 agreement continued its government-aided status with management-committee and alumni support.
The Applied Learning Programme combines Design Thinking with Critical Design Futures Thinking. Secondary 1 Eco-Innovators work with the Singapore Institute of Technology on problems such as canteen food waste. The Secondary 2 programme with Super Bean International, associated with Mr Bean, uses soya bean pulp to develop food products. These are named learning projects rather than a promise of an industry internship. Families can ask how much time pupils spend testing and revising a prototype, how teachers assess the process, and whether the incoming cohort will have the same partners and project brief.
