How to choose between them
Both schools sit in the South zone with similar COP ceilings, so the real decision comes down to what your child values most. Yio Chu Kang opens doors through DSA with an unusually wide 14-area spread, while Yuying's 115-year heritage, 26 CCAs, and dual SYF Distinctions signal a school that invests deeply in holistic development.
Consider Yio Chu Kang Secondary School if…
- 14 DSA areas gives talent-led admission the widest possible runway
- Strong option if your child's strength hasn't fully crystallised yet
Consider Yuying Secondary School if…
- 26 CCAs and 2 SYF Distinctions mean richer co-curricular culture
- Tighter top-end COP of 11 signals a more academically competitive cohort
If your child thrives through structured activities and arts, Yuying wins; if DSA flexibility matters most, Yio Chu Kang is the smarter bet.
Get to know each school
Yio Chu Kang Secondary School
MOE records the school’s establishment in 1965, its move to Ang Mo Kio Avenue 5 in 1982, and the merger with Chong Boon Secondary in 2018. The merged school retained Yio Chu Kang’s English name and adopted Chong Boon’s Chinese name, 崇文中学. It introduced a new school song in 2019. The heritage record also dates its performing-arts niche status to 2007 and Pathlight satellite partnership to 2014. Older alumni accounts may therefore concern a different period of school organisation; the merger is an important boundary when reading them.
The ALP centres on technological sustainability and connects STEM knowledge to community problems. Its structured curriculum develops coding and computational thinking through inquiry, with a Secondary 1–2 curriculum overview. Further options include the Mechatronics, Aeronautical and Robotics club, competitions, Secondary 3 polytechnic elective modules, mentorship and a maker programme. These are additional opportunities for interested pupils, not a guarantee that every child receives every placement. STEM DSA entrants are expected to join the relevant club. A family should compare ordinary curriculum exposure with the time, selection and commitments attached to deeper participation.
Yuying Secondary School
Yuying traces its beginnings to the Hainanese community in 1910, at Prinsep Street. Its Chinese history records wartime disruption and the July 1946 reopening, and says the primary section closed in 1983. The school moved to 47 Hougang Avenue 1 in December 1985 and adopted its present name; the new premises officially opened in August 1987. Its English and Chinese histories differ on when the secondary section began, so the founding year should not be read as a settled date for that section. A 2015 agreement continued its government-aided status with management-committee and alumni support.
The Applied Learning Programme combines Design Thinking with Critical Design Futures Thinking. Secondary 1 Eco-Innovators work with the Singapore Institute of Technology on problems such as canteen food waste. The Secondary 2 programme with Super Bean International, associated with Mr Bean, uses soya bean pulp to develop food products. These are named learning projects rather than a promise of an industry internship. Families can ask how much time pupils spend testing and revising a prototype, how teachers assess the process, and whether the incoming cohort will have the same partners and project brief.
