What does the COP suffix mean?

D = HMT Distinction required, M = Merit, P = Pass, no suffix = no HMT requirement. So 8M is harder to meet than 8 — your child needs at least Merit in Higher Chinese (or whichever HMT).

Can my child apply to SAP without HMT?

Accepted Answer

If the school's COP for that year has no suffix at the AL band you're applying to, yes. But for elite SAPs the suffix is almost always present — Catholic High, Nan Hua, Hwa Chong, etc.

Is SAP only for Chinese students?

Accepted Answer

SAP schools are open to all but the curriculum centres on the dominant mother tongue (Chinese for most SAPs). A non-Chinese-speaking student would find HMT requirements impractical.
