How to choose between them
Mayflower and Queensway sit in the same COP band and both earned 2 SYF Distinctions, so the real differentiator is what your child wants to pursue beyond academics. One school opens significantly more doors through DSA; the other brings six decades of institutional depth.
Consider Mayflower Secondary School if…
- 14 DSA areas gives the widest talent pathway of any comparable school
- 22 CCAs means more chances to find a genuine fit
Consider Queensway Secondary School if…
- 65 years of heritage signals stable culture and alumni network
- Identical COP and SYF record with a smaller, tighter community feel
If your child already has a specific talent to develop, Mayflower's DSA breadth is hard to beat; if you value tradition and a close-knit school culture, Queensway's legacy speaks for itself.
Get to know each school
Mayflower Secondary School
Mayflower Secondary began in 1981 with 408 pupils in Ang Mo Kio and officially opened on 15 July 1983. Space constraints led it to use two campuses from 2001, including the former Bowen Secondary site. It came together in a new building in 2005, with a 200-seat theatrette and dance studio. That history is relevant to its present arts emphasis, though the school’s programme pages give a better guide to current access than old anniversary accounts or alumni destinations.
Effective Communication is the ALP. English activities include Secondary 1 speech and drama and Secondary 2 journalism and broadcasting; mother tongue follows a different sequence, with Secondary 1 reading, Secondary 2 speech and drama, and Secondary 3 journalism and broadcasting. Pupils practise scripts, presentations and reporting. More advanced workshops in translation, debate or recital depend on interest and aptitude, with selected pupils entering competitions. The webpage retains some older stream labels, so families should ask how the current cohort’s subject levels map to those activities.
Queensway Secondary School
Queensway Secondary opened at Margaret Drive in 1961. MOE’s history describes growth to two sessions and additional classroom blocks as the neighbourhood expanded. Mei Chin Secondary merged with it in 2000 and Buona Vista Secondary in 2001; the upgraded school’s official opening followed in 2003. The history records environmental science and sports-and-outdoor-education signature programmes introduced in 2014. Those are historical milestones: the current July 2026 LLP page instead describes Community Youth Leadership, so an older programme label should not stand in for today’s published curriculum.
The Applied Learning Programme gives all S1 pupils water-treatment learning, energy-from-water activities and a sea-perch construction project for navigation and water testing. S2 content moves to nutrition, food production, innovation and waste management. A separate Tier 2 AI programme covers generative AI, art and coding, and microcontroller applications; its public page does not specify selection criteria or guarantee access to every pupil. These are clearer points of comparison than a general claim that a school teaches sustainability: families can ask what their child will build, test and explain.
