Get to know each school

Broadrick Secondary School

Broadrick was founded in 1968 at Dunman Road with Chinese- and English-stream students, becoming English-medium in 1985. MOE’s Heritage Centre records mergers with Maju in 1996, Telok Kurau in 2011 and MacPherson in 2017. The current campus is at 61 Dakota Crescent. The school’s own heritage page places it within the wider Mountbatten neighbourhood, including Dakota’s former public housing and Kallang Airport. This history helps explain why more than one former school community is represented in today’s Broadrick.

The current ALP page describes foundational learning in Secondary 1 and 2 through Geography, Design and Technology, and Code for Fun. More advanced Secondary 3 opportunities are for pupils with strong interest and aptitude. The science page gives examples including designing sustainability prototypes, working with NIE researchers and a mentoring project for outdoor workers facing heat. These are useful descriptions of what students make and investigate. The selected programmes should not be presented as an automatic experience for every pupil.

Nanyang Girls' High School

Nanyang Girls’ began in a rented Dhoby Ghaut shophouse in 1917, later moving to King’s Road and then Linden Drive in June 1999. It became a SAP school in 1979 and independent in 1993. MOE’s history records the Integrated Programme partnership with Hwa Chong Institution starting in 2004, followed by the Bicultural Studies Programme in 2005. These milestones explain the school’s bilingual and bicultural setting. They do not make every specialist programme automatic for every student; the current talent-development pages should be read alongside individual selection requirements.

All lower-secondary pupils experience art, dance, food studies, maker and music lessons. Maker work uses design thinking: understanding users, identifying needs, developing prototypes and revising products after feedback. Music examples include songwriting and film music; Chinese dance forms part of Appreciation of Chinese Culture. AEP and Higher Music are additional subjects offered through selection, including art portfolio interviews and music auditions. Pupils can also apply at the end of Sec 2 for upper-secondary entry, subject to selection. Broad exposure is therefore distinct from taking a specialist subject.
