Get to know each school

Methodist Girls' School (Secondary)

MGS began in 1887 under Sophia Blackmore, moved to Mount Sophia in 1925 and Blackmore Drive in 1992. Its secondary section became independent in 1989 and added the IP in 2013. The current academic pages distinguish the Secondary Education Certificate track from a six-year IP, with Years 5 and 6 at Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) for the International Baccalaureate Diploma. Families should identify the actual offered track before comparing assessment, progression and fees; the shared school name does not make the two programmes interchangeable.

The SEC page gives lower-secondary pupils a broad curriculum including computing, project work and Contemporary Issues: Perspectives & Inquiry. CPI is specifically offered to Sec 1 and 2 in the SEC track, using research and discussion to examine identity, diversity and differing perspectives. Upper-secondary pupils combine core subjects with two to four electives, subject to approval; the list includes Computing, sciences, humanities and Music. A published subject list therefore needs to be read with allocation requirements, rather than as a guarantee of any chosen combination.

Temasek Secondary School

Temasek Secondary began in 1980, briefly sharing Bedok South Secondary’s premises before moving to its own Upper Changi Road campus that May. It officially opened in April 1982. Autonomous status and its Higher Malay Language centre followed in 1995; the move to 600 Upper East Coast Road came in 1999. MOE records student leadership as a hallmark from 2001, Cross-Cultural Awareness from 2014 and the Temasek Ignis Programme from 2016. These are the school’s own strands, distinct from Temasek JC’s Integrated Programme.

In S1 Project Culture, pupils work in groups to investigate a nationality living in Singapore, compare cultural practices and give an oral presentation. S2 Camp Culture is non-residential, combining visits and facilitated reflection; the page describes its broader Singapore-history and multicultural focus from 2018. Overseas school exchanges resumed after 2023, with examples in Thailand, Malaysia and other ASEAN countries. The local curriculum and overseas opportunities should be distinguished: families should ask which trips run for the coming cohort, how places are allocated and what participation costs.
